2026 world cup where is it

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is destined to be one of the most landmark events in soccer history. It is the first time that the World Cup will be co-hosted by three countries (the United States, Canada and Mexico) and the first time that the tournament will be expanded to 48 teams.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will return to Los Angeles! The largest city on the U.S. West Coast is gearing up for this globally-anticipated sporting event, not only hosting eight World Cup matches (including the first for the U.S. team), but also welcoming the 2028 Summer Olympics to Los Angeles in two years. With two of the world’s top events to be hosted back-to-back in three years, the sports boom in Los Angeles is continuing to heat up.

It’s been reported that LA’s World Cup events will be held primarily at SoFi Stadium. The modern stadium in Inglewood has a capacity of around 70,000 and since opening in 2020 has become one of the most advanced stadiums in the United States. The U.S. men’s soccer team’s first match will be played there on June 12, 2026, in addition to eight other matches that Los Angeles will host, including group and knockout rounds and a quarterfinal.
As the largest seaport, manufacturing and trade center on the U.S. West Coast, as well as a globally renowned tourist city, Los Angeles is expected to welcome thousands of international fans during the World Cup. This will not only drive a spending boom in local hotels, restaurants, transportation, entertainment and other industries, but also attract global sponsors and brands scrambling to enter in order to capture the fast-growing soccer market in North America.
Major League Soccer (MLS) has expanded rapidly in recent years, adding 10 new teams since 2015, and the fan base is growing. According to Nielsen Scarborough, Los Angeles is the second-largest World Cup host city in the country in terms of soccer fans per capita, behind Houston.

In addition, FIFA data shows that 67% of fans are more likely to support World Cup sponsor brands, and 59% will prioritize purchasing products from official World Cup sponsors when price and quality are comparable. This trend undoubtedly provides a huge market opportunity for global brands and prompts companies to invest more actively in the World Cup.
The return of the World Cup to Los Angeles has excited many fans. Soccer enthusiasts around the city have commented that it is a rare opportunity to watch a world-class tournament at their doorstep. However, not all Los Angeles residents have welcomed this. Some people are concerned that the World Cup could lead to traffic jams, upgraded security measures, higher costs of living in the city, and may even exacerbate the rise in rents and housing prices in some areas.
In addition, large international events are usually accompanied by huge financial expenditures. Past cases have shown that high costs are involved in infrastructure development, security, and public transportation adjustments, which is one of the general concerns of the public.
The 2026 World Cup is the first time in history that three countries (the United States, Canada, and Mexico) will co-host the World Cup, with the opening match to be held on June 11, 2026 at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, and the final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA.
