Paddle tennis, also known as platform tennis, is a racket sport typically played in cool or cold weather. While it resembles traditional tennis, the rules and gameplay vary. To help you understand paddle tennis better, we have compiled a list of rules that differentiate it from the traditional sport of tennis.
Paddle Tennis Rules – Differences from Traditional Tennis
1. The paddle tennis court is smaller (44 feet long and 20 feet wide with a playing area of 60 feet by 30 feet) than a typical tennis court surrounded by a well-maintained chain fence (12 feet height) that comes into play after the ball bounces off the court. The net in the middle is approximately 37 inches tall. There is a space of 8 feet between the baseline and the fence and 5 feet between the side lines and the fence.
2. The platform tennis ball is made of rubber with flocking. The pallets used are perforated for less air resistance.
3. Paddle tennis is always played outdoors, especially in winter, so that the ball and the screens surrounding the court are more solid and not too “bouncy”. Radiators are rarely used and are located under the bridge to melt snow – while playing. The surface has a sandpaper-like texture, which prevents players from slipping, especially if it snows.
4. Paddle tennis is always played in doubles. Although the court is smaller than a typical tennis court, it is still too big for singles. More communication with your partner is needed … during the point!
5. The receivers are both back and should mostly lob, lob and lob again, waiting for setup to begin.
6. The server almost always has to load the network and join its partner. They only get one service, not 2.
7. The home team can play the ball OFF the screens but not inside. Therefore, it can take a long time for each paddle point. One point can often be 30 or more round trips, followed by another! Therefore, it is a great cardio workout. The game requires patience, power, speed, and sometimes quick thinking.
8. In platform tennis, volleys have less footwork and are mostly backhands.
9. There are many general selections available, but mixing speed, rotation and position can help.
Paddle Tennis Rules – Similarities to Traditional Tennis
1. The score for paddle tennis is the same as for regular tennis. (ex. Love-15-30-40-Game)
2. Workouts (which are not usually meant to be successful) are similar to tennis but more compact in that the ball can come back even faster, so you need to be prepared.
